We had an interesting discussion at the dinner table tonight and I thought it would be fun to post about it.
Last year, Matt had made a comment that he would give Megan money if she took her lunch to school. She would be saving him money, so why not pass the savings onto Megan?
I had mentioned to Matt tonight that she has only ate at school about 5 times this school year and takes her lunch about everyday. I mentioned to him the whole comment about paying Megan and he decided to sit down and figure out how much it costs us to send lunch with her versus eating a hot lunch at school.
Here is what we did:
1. To make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich:
loaf of bread- 12 sandwiches- usually around $1.35, so .11 per sandwich
peanut butter- 70 servings(really 35, but I don't put 2 tablespoons on each
sandwich) around $4.00 for 32 oz., 5 cents per sandwich
jelly- 45 Tablespoon servings- usually around $1.30, so 3 cents per sandwich
2. Yogurt 35 cents per container
3. Capri Sun 15 cents per drink
4. Some sort of fruit (grapes, banana, apples, cantaloupe, canned fruit) 15 cents per serving
5. crackers, or granola bar, or vanilla wafers, 15 cents per serving
These are all estimates, but when you add it up, it costs us about $1.00 for her to take a cold lunch to school.
To eat a hot lunch at school, it costs $1.95 this year. We save about $1.00 everyday that she takes her lunch!
So then Matt decided to see how much she would save us over the entire school year.
There are 188 days of school and she does eat her lunch at school every Wednesday because they have chicken nuggets.
188- 36 = 152 days of cold lunch
She would roughly save us $152 a school year if she took her lunch to school everyday but Wednesdays.
So, in the end, Matt decided to pay her 25 cents for every cold lunch she took. We're still coming out ahead! I told him I should get paid too because I have to go shopping for the groceries and put her lunch together in the morning.
We'll see what happens, but I did find this all interesting!

Redo the Dining Room too?
Matt and I have decided that it is about time we buy a dining room table and chairs. We've lived in this house for over two years and we still have no furniture in that room. With adding one more person to our family and only have 4 chairs at the kitchen table, we thought a dining room table would be nice where we could sit and have dinner as a family.
Bought today:
new curtains
new sheers
new paint
new curtain rod
Need:
new floor
new chandalier
dining room table
hutch
We also thought if we get a table in there, it won't turn into the playroom anymore!
Anybody want to help pull all the ugly blue flowered wallpaper off the walls?? (or have any good tricks how to get it off.)

Enjoying the Weather!
It was so nice today, I had to take the kids outside!
Matt put the training wheels back on Megan's bike and it is now officially handed down to Courtney. She wanted to ride it today, so we went off on a walk. A really long walk.
We were probably quite the sight coming up some of these hills. I had one hand on the stroller and the other hand pushing Courtney up the hill.
When I was about ready to be done with it all, a neighbor drove by who had kids about 3 years apart and said, "I remember doing that exact same thing!" and then kind of laughed. Ok, I'm laughing too. But I don't know if I'll attempt that again for awhile.
Courtney did a great job riding her bike (on flat surfaces), Christian was good, and we all had a good time outside!

We made it half the night.:)
I got Christian to sleep in his bed last night! I was amazed!
BUT at 2:08, I woke up to somebody crying. :(
I pretty much knew this would happen because whenever he slept in his pack-n-play, he would wake up at 2, if he slept in his swing, he would sleep all night.
I went in there and rocked him and put him back down. He woke up again, rocked him again and put him down again, woke up again. Now I'm getting frustrated because I'm getting used to a full night's sleep and I'm tired! Finally I give in and nurse him. I rock him again and put him back in his bed. He still won't stay asleep. Finally I give up and put him in his swing! I turn it on and I go back to bed. It's 2:30.
I told myself I would give him a couple of minutes to fall asleep and then go back in and turn the swing off. That didn't happen, the swing was still on when Matt left for work at 6:30 am!
Maybe tonight we'll make it all night, hopefully.

Everybody did great!
Ah, it feels good to have a good night's sleep!!
Christian slept all night (in his swing, of course), I didn't wake up to his grunting and noises during the night and then didn't wake up til about 6:15, and of course, Matt slept all night (like always!).
I went into his rooom at 6:30 and he was wide awake. I said, "Did you sleep good?" and Christian just grinned at me. I asked him if he liked his room and he grinned again. I take that as a yes!
Now, can he just sleep in his crib?

Guess who got kicked out??
Christian did!
Since we painted his room yesterday, tonight is his first night in his own room! We thought it smelled too much like paint last night yet, so he slept in our room again, but not tonight! He's on his own!
I sat in there and fed him and laid him down, within 5 minutes, he was fussing, so I put him right in his swing. (Last night, I had him down 4 times before we gave up and put him in his swing). I don't know if his reflux is bothering him or not again.
He slept all last night in his swing, he didn't even get up at 2 am to eat, hopefully he'll do the same thing tonight! I'll probably be up at 2 am to see how he's doing!

It's painted!!!
Christian's room is finally a nice light blue color!
I'm soooo excited! Next step, put up his crib and move him in!!

Back to sleep already?
Ok, I woke Christian up at 8:30 and he has already fallen back to sleep on my lap as I sit on my computer, it's 9:32.
Maybe he's growing?
Maybe he's growing?
It's working toooo good...
Ok, I shouldn't be complaing, but ever since I put Christian in his room to nap with his swing on, he is sleeping the entire day away! Now we never see him. Yes, I am getting to spend more time with Courtney and get much more housework done, but I would love to spend some more time with the little guy. Can there be a happy medium here???
I actually woke him up tonight at 8:30 so he would be up for awhile before he went to bed, I don't want to be up all night with him!

But mom, everybody else is doing it!
Ever since school started, Megan has been BEGGING me to let her wear tennis shoes with a dress. Honestly, I don't really like the idea, but she kept saying, "but so and so does it." Today she has PE and has to wear tennis shoes and she was refusing to wear shorts or capris.
I just gave in...and I don't think it looks that bad. What do you think?
(Of course through all this, I remember how I would wear nothing but dresses to kindergarten and 1st grade. I would even wear shorts underneath my dresses so I could hang upside down on the monkey bars, how can I make her wear shorts/ capris when I never did??)
Already swinging today!

Making Progress Today
Today I decided that we are going to utilize Christian's own room since the desk is downstairs and there is room in there now. I put his swing in there and then I put him down for a nap at 9:15 this morning. He slept until 11:45!! Of course, he swung in his swing the entire time, but still, he didn't keep waking up every 10 minutes!
I just put him down again about 1:45, back in his room and back in his swing, we'll see how long he naps this time..
(This is a boy who cannot just lay down and go to sleep. He needs to be nursed or rocked to sleep. Once he is asleep, you cannot just lay him down in his bed. He will wake up almost immediately, but if you put him in a swing and let him swing, he will sleep. I know it's a bad habit to get into, but it sure helps me out. He sleeps fine in his bed at night, except when he wakes up, he thinks he has to nurse to get back to sleep. He needs to learn to soothe himself back to sleep. We'll keep working with him.)

Christian and Courtney's Statistics
I took Christian in for his 2 month check up on Monday.
He weighs 14.1 pounds and is 24 1/2 inches long! (90% for both)
I looked back at my girls, and this is what they both were at 4 months, not 2.
Yikes!
He got 3 shots and did really well.
Courtney also had her 4 year appointment.
She weighs 34.6 pounds and is 41 inches tall. I think she gained 4.6 pounds this year and grew about 4 inches! She had to get one shot while we were there, but she did good. Of course, her leg hurt all night and she's NEVER getting a shot again! (Courtney's words). I told her she doesn't have to get shots for another 2 years, hopefully she'll forget about it by then. :)
I take Megan in for her 7 year checkup in November, I'm anxious to see how much she's grown! She also has a shot to get, but we won't remind her. :)

What happened??
Christian was doing really good, up once a night at about 4, he would eat and go back to sleep all within about 10 minutes.
Not anymore!!!
The last two nights, we've been up at least twice.
Here is what happened last night:
He fell asleep in his bouncy seat while we were having supper about 7. He was still sleeping when we put the girls to bed at 9, so we just moved him and his bouncy seat to his pack n play and said good night- no diaper change, no pajamas. I figured he'd be up anyway in a few hours and I would change him then.
1 am Christian wakes up. I get him up, change his diaper, put his pajamas on, and nurse him.
1: 49 he lays back down and goes to sleep.
4 am Christian is up again, but this time, he's happy. Of course, he's been sleeping since 7 pm!
It is not time to be happy, but time to go back to sleep. I get him up, nurse him, and lay him down. He is still not content. I nurse him again and again (maybe he's still hungry?)
5:23 he is back down and sleeping.
7:15 alarm goes off to get up and get Megan off to school
I was up over 2 hours with Christian last night. Something needs to change! (But I'm not feeling too bad this morning, wait til about 5 pm tonight and I'll start falling asleep). I barely remember Matt leaving this morning, probably because I was sleeping!
My girls slept through the night at 8 weeks, we're about 10 weeks and still up twice, maybe he's just growing?? He's been sleeping quite a bit during the day lately and not eating as much. Last week, he ate all the time. Hopefully it's just a short phase and we'll get through it here shortly!

2 things
I have come to the conclusion:
Two things I don't like about having birthday parties.
1. Cleaning up before people get here
2. Cleaning up after people leave

Big Birthday Party is Over :(
Courtney had all her friends and family over today to celebrate her 4th birthday!
We had a great time! She got lots of great gifts and had beautiful cake!
I will get to the pictures tomorrow, it's too late tonight. I'm exhausted and Megan has a full week of school ahead of her, starting tomorrow. That means no more sleeping in and getting up with Christian at 6:30 am! Yikes!

Happy Birthday Courtney!!
On August 14th at 4:19 pm Courtney Grace Ruwe was born!!
After contracting on my own during the morning, I went to the doctor at 10 am because I had my week overdue appointment and ultrasound scheduled. My contractions had stopped. At the doctor, my midwife checked me and I was 4 cm. I was elated- I had to be induced with Megan, so to have a baby on my own was pretty exciting! She stripped my membranes and I went back home about noon.
By 2 pm, we were back into full labor and at Methodist Hospital. I labored for a couple of hours on my own (no pitocin required!!), got in the whirlpool, and at 4:19 Courtney was born!
Here I am having contractions at the hospital.

6:30 am
This has been Christian's wake-up time for the last 3 days.
I don't like it. :(
Doesn't he know that I don't NEED to get up until 7:30 or so?
Of course, this is his happiest time of the day and I just can't let him lay in bed wide awake, he wants to play! (and eat of course).
He's usually back to sleep by 8-8:30 or so. Right in time to take Megan out to the bus stop.
Lovely.

Pinched Nerve in my neck and a big boy!
So I just got back from the doctor and he thinks I have a pinched nerve in my neck, which is only being made worse by nursing and holding Christian! My tingling extends from my shoulders all the way down to my fingers. He wants me to go have an EMG done on Monday to see how bad and where the pinching is exactly at. We've met our deductible, so why not?
He was going to give me a prescription for some anti-inflammatory drugs, but I can't take them because I am nursing. Instead, he told me to stretch my neck muscles and I could take the hydrocodone I have left from when I had Christian. He mentioned maybe holding him a different way when I am feeding him so I don't pull on all the muscles in my neck. He said a warm pack would help too.
We also talked about the fact that Christian is already 13 pounds and he is only going to get heavier, so I need to figure something out. I want to nurse him for at least a year and I can't go all year with a tingling arm. The doctor seemed to know what he is talking about, so I'll stick with his advice and see what the tests results are on Monday!

Going back to the doctor...for me this time.
For awhile now, I have had tingling sensation in my wrists, I contribute this to nursing. This happened when I was almost done nursing Megan and Courtney, except with Christian, it began about a month ago. It always goes away when I am done, but I have 10 months left with Christian!
Well now, the tingling has moved up my arms up to my shoulders and into my hands and fingers! I just want to shake it out, but it doesn't help. This morning, it has already started and it's hard to even lift my arms above my shoulders. This isn't going to work when I have three children to take care of, especially a baby who needs to eat and who likes to be held.
I am heading to the doctor today, pretty sure it's carpel tunnel or something like that, but I want to get it checked out.
(Actually I was out at the bus stop this morning telling another couple moms about it and they said they had carpel tunnel when they were nursing too, they gave me some exercises that might help, but I'm still going to the doctor!)

Megan survived!
Megan made it home from her first day of school! The bus route is backwards, so I had to go out there and wait for it. After talking to the bus driver, I think he is going to come around the block the other way like last year, it is much safer for the 10+ kids that get off at our stop.
Megan is in the same classroom with the same teachers. They have desks now instead of tables and her teacher changed a lot of things, which is good.
I am downloading pictures now, so we'll get those out shortly!

Ok, that is what my night looked like last night, I'm going to be tired later!
11- I turn my light off and go to sleep.
1- Up with Christian
3- Courtney was in our room because there was "something" in her room. Matt took her back to her room and back to bed.
5- Up again with Christian
6:30- Christian is wide awake in his bed, so I get him up.
No going back to sleep today, it's the first day of school and Megan's alarm is set for 7:15!

Sorry Dell!
I just got home from being out with my mom all afternoon and realized that I let our dog Dell out around 11:30 when I left...but forgot to let her back in! The poor thing was panting away outside when I got home at 4:20!
I am soooo sorry! She's been laying over the cold air register ever since I let her in! Poor thing! On one of the hottest days of the year too!
I am soooo sorry! She's been laying over the cold air register ever since I let her in! Poor thing! On one of the hottest days of the year too!
Megan's last day of summer vacation- boy am I going to miss her!
Today is Megan's last day at home before school starts tomorrow.
Things we must accomplish today:
Find Megan some tennis shoes! We have been to a bunch of stores, but they are either too big, too small, or she just doesn't like them. I want to try to hit the mall today and if there's nothing at Penney's or Payless (where we've already been), she's going without!
I also want to do something fun for Megan. I've been thinking about this the last couple of days, but can't come up with anything out of the ordinary. She would be happy just to go to the mall and play! My mom is coming into town and said we could do lunch together. I even asked her where she would want to go for lunch and she doesn't know.
All I can say is that I am really going to miss having her around! She has been SUCH a big help these last two months with not only her sister, but with her brother! It might be worse sending her to first grade than it was to kindergarten last year! Whenever I needed something, she would always be the first to go get it. Even today, I asked her to go upstairs and get something and she went right off. There are certain things she can do that Courtney can't quite yet.
Many times we have been out in public and Courtney has had to go potty, Megan always says, "I'll take her!" which helps a ton! I am usually in the middle of something and Christian is with me.
Megan loves taking care of her sister! They have played together all summer and have really bonded (and fought a lot too). They are always running off together to go play, which has made it much easier to take care of Christian, especially since he's been fussy.
Megan also loves to help with her brother. She has this certain trick to getting him to sleep when I can't. One day I was just fighting him to go to sleep in his swing. I told Megan to come over and try to get him to sleep. She came over, turned his music on, pulled his cover over his head, and out he went! How did she do that?? Christian loves his big sister too! He is always smiling at her and following where she is going. Megan has a certain way of talking to him that always makes him smile. They have even started to interact. Megan will get out toys and shake them and have him follow her from side to side. I love it and so does she!
Besides taking Courtney potty when we're out, she also helps me out in other ways. For example, she helped push Christian in the grocery cart the other day and took her job very seriously! The other night when she was going to bed I told her how I am going to miss her help at the grocery store and she said, "Mom, you're just going to have to wait until I get home from school to go to the store." I asked her why and she said because she wants to push Christian around again!
A couple of weeks ago I told her that I am going to keep her home this year and homeschool her because I love having her around, but of course, I know she has to go back to school. She learned so much last year and really loves it! We went to open house last night and she got back into her classroom and found her desk. She saw all her old classmates, she has the same class and teacher this year again. It was wierd because when school got out last year, I was still pregnant with Christian and now I'm taking my new baby up there. Many people hadn't seen him yet and were all interested in him. Of course, I think it was fun for Megan to show her brother off!
It will certainly be interesting this year. I know Megan has to go back to school, but can't I just keep her home???

Slept all night?
Was that right? Did Christian just sleep all night? I think he did!
We were over at Uncle Chad's last night and about 9, I fed him and he fell asleep. I put him in his carseat so we could take him home. By the time we got home, he was sound asleep, so again, we just put his carseat in his bed. Why interrupt the little guy??
About 3:30-4, I woke up and see if he's still alive because he's not fussing to eat. Yep, still alive and not awake. So I go back to sleep. About 6, I wake up again, and still, he's not awake, but he's making noises. About 6:20, I see his eyes open and he is still buckled into his carseat from last night!
I get him out, change his diaper, and feed him (mama isn't use to going all night yet!). Now he's rustling in his bed, he usually goes back to sleep, so we'll see what he does.
Wow, I could get use to this, but did he sleep all night because he was in his carseat and upright, so his reflux didn't bother him??? I wonder.
By the way, Chad and Matt moved Matt's big desk downtiars last night so Christian has his own room! It is no longer the office! The next step is to find some curtains I like (or some material to make them) and to paint the room. Then the crib will go up and he's moving in! I am pretty excited!

I didn't want to eat anyway...
I thought I would give this post that title because that is exactly what I was thinking as we were having lunch today.
Like any other typical Sunday, we stopped at CiCi's Pizza afterwards to have lunch. We had to make a quick stop at Walmart on our way there (we're still trying to find tennis shoes that fit Megan and ones that she likes). Christian was kind of fussy in Walmart, so we knew he would need to eat first thing when we got to CiCi's.
We got in, we paid, and I sat down to nurse Christian while Matt, Megan, and Courtney went and got drinks and food. Matt was even nice and brought me two pieces of pizza! I got a couple bites while I was nursing, but that is about it. I fed Christian half way and put him back in his carseat, thinking he would be content a little bit and I could eat. I finsihed getting my one piece down and he's fussing again. Ok, fine, I will finish feeding you. The rest of my family is on their 2nd trip to the buffet already.
I feed Christian and as he is finishing up, I look down, there are yellow spots on my pants, one as big as a quarter or so! Mr. Christian was pooping and it was leaking onto my pants! Since he is sideways when he nurses, it ran right out! Off to the bathroom I went to change his diaper, his clothes, and maybe salvage my light khaki pants!
When I got back, Matt was eating dessert and the girls were finishing up. I hadn't even started yet! Luckily Christian was happy now. He ate, he pooped, what else does a baby want? I put him in a carseat, told him how much trouble he was causing me, and went off to eat! Finally!

My Little Dancer
Megan talked her dad into letting her take dance this school year, so we start today.
It is at the same place and with the same teacher that she took a dance camp from this summer. I thought she did great and Megan really loved it, so we're going back to her (plus she's very reasonably priced!).
So now every Saturday from 2-3 pm for the entire school year, somebody will be trotting Megan to dance class.
So the taxi service begins...

Another Visitor Last Night
Courtney was in our room again this morning at 5 am because she said there was a bug in her room. Matt took her back to her and her room and she showed him the bug. It was a nail in her wall! Matt took it out and let her see that it was not a bug. She went right back to sleep. :)
Will she be in my room tomorrow morning at 5 am?

The Joys of Motherhood
I was wondering this morning, can the joys of motherhood come at 5 pm instead of 5 am??
I was up 4 am this morning feeding Christian, which is fine. He is usually up at this time and he usually goes right back to sleep.
This morning was a little different. It took him awhile to get back to sleep and about 5, he starts his grunting. Seriously, can this boy just poop and get it done with? No, it takes him til about 6:30 to get his job done. And he's grunting almost this entire time, right beside me! (but sleeping, of course). So of course, I am half asleep/ half awake.
In the middle of all this (probably around 5:45-6), Miss Courtney decides that she doesn't want to sleep in her room anymore because there is a fly in there. I wake up to somebody tapping me on my arm. I look over and it is Courtney wanting to know if she can sleep in our room. I say fine and tell her to lay down on the floor. Well, the floor is too cold, so I give her a blanket to lay on. Not settled down yet, pretty soon she is up to go potty. I hear a thunk and a scream from her bathroom so I go running in there. Another fly! For the thousandth time, I tell her that flies will not hurt her! I put her back into our room on her makeshift bed. Pretty soon I hear, "Mom, there's a fly in here! Can I shut your door?" I told her no, but she could surely go back to her room and shut her door, so she did.
Being about 6:45, I don't think there's any way I was going back to sleep because Matt is ready to leave, the sun is coming up, Christian is awake because he has finally done his business and needs to eat, I'm starving and have a headache. I give in and get Christian up and get myself some breakfast and some advil!
To top it all off, when I picked Christian up to feed him and change him, he had pooped through his sleeper and onto his sheets. Lovely. Now I'm doing laundry at 7 am too.
I'm warning everybody, I might not be a happy later with lack of sleep.
(I didn't get to bed til 11 last night, so 5-6 hours of sleep for me!)

New Post
Ok, I have a bunch of blog ideas floating around in my head. I just need to sit down and write them out.
1. Recap of the Dodge County parade and time at Grandma's-pictures included
2. Why I will miss Megan when she goes back to school in a week.
3. Update on Christian
4. Something about Courtney
I wanted to let everyone know that Megan can officially tie her shoes now! Matt and I are making her get tennis shoes with ties for PE this year. Megan and Matt sat down last night and he taught her how to tie and today, she did it all by herself. She said to me, "Mom, write it on your blog that I can tie my shoes now!" So, here it is! She is pretty proud!

Mr. Cranky Today
I haven't had a cranky baby for about a week, but today it seemed like we were back to square one! From about noon til 7 tonight, Christian wouldn't stay asleep and the later in the afternoon it got, the fussier he became. I had him to sleep quite a few times, but he would not stay asleep. He was soooo tired, but just would not settle down and when he would get to sleep, he would wake up screaming at me in about 10 minutes. This is what happened before I put him on the Prevacid. We were doing so good! I had a baby who would sleep and was happy! I'm not sure what happened today. (I have been giving him his medicine twice a day for the last two weeks, so we didn't skip a dosage to make him act like this.)
Finally about 7 tonight, I gave him some more Prevacid and he acted better almost immediately.
Tonight, I gave the girls baths and Matt was taking care of Christian. When I was done, he was sleeping on Matt's shoulder. I have a feeling he is going to sleep for a VERY long time tonight.

Quite the sight at the store today
Today, I told the girls we had to get groceries and school supplies for Megan to start school next week. This involved taking all 3 kids to Walmart. Last time we went, things went well, so I thought I would try it again.
A couple of times ago, when I just took Christian, I put his carseat on the top of the cart and he was fussy the entire time (probably because of his reflux). Last time, I put Christian's carseat in the back of the cart, but then he got buried in groceries. I needed a new plan.
My new plan today was to get two carts. While I still have Megan home during the day and she's always begging to push the cart, I thought I would get one cart to put Christian in and another cart to put groceries in. So we did and it worked great! I put Christian's carseat in one cart, faced him forward so he could see everything, and put Megan in charge of him. I got another cart and filled it with groceries. We had a very pleasant trip. As long as she kept him moving, he was good.
As I said, we had to be quite the sight at the store today! It really helped to give Megan some responsibility, she took taking care of her brother very seriously and did very well (as long as she wasn't blocking the isle and driving into people)!

Funny way to put kids to bed!
We were at my parents' last night for supper and got home pretty late (10:30)
Here's how we dealt with putting our kids to bed last night:
1. Megan stayed awake the whole way home. When we got home, she put on herr pajamas, brushed her teeth, Matt sangs songs/ said prayers, and she went to bed.
2. Courtney fell asleep on the way home. When we got home, Matt put her right to bed. Pretty dress and all (no, this is not the first time we have done this.) Usually when she wakes up in the morning, she will come into my room and say, "Somebody forgot to put pajamas on me last night!". But this morning, she didn't even realize she still had her dress on. She did not brush her teeth or songs/ prayers.
3. Christian was asleep before we even left grandmas, I think it was about 7:45 when he fell asleep. He had his pajamas on and we put him in his carseat. He too slept all the way home. When we got home, I just put his carseat in his bed and let him be! (If he would've been our first kid, I probably wouldn't have done this!) He slept there until 4:44 this morning! That was a long stretch, except I kept waking up and checking on him because he wasn't up at usual times to eat.
I fed him then and he was awake a little bit. At 5:30 he went back to sleep for about another 1 1/2 hours, then he ate a little bit more, slept a little bit more. He did this until Courtney came into my room at 8:45 am.
Now we are all up for the day. We only have about another week of sleeping in until Megan has to start getting up and going to school every day. Hopefully Christian will start sleeping through the night pretty soon and I can get a good night's sleep again! I'm tired now the way it is, I'm going to need naps or coffee to keep me going through the day in about a week!
