Sleep baby!

Why does my baby not want to sleep anymore???

He woke up at 8 this morning and did not nap until after lunch. At this time, it was about a 20-30 minute nap.

He fell asleep again a couple of hours later and actually slept about an hour in his bed.

All afternoon and evening, he would not give in and take a nap, even though I knew he was sooo tired!

I eventually got him to sleep tonight around 9.

My 3 1/2 month old had not even two hours worth of naps today. Is that the way it is supposed to be at this age??

PS- This is not the first time that has slept so little in a day!

Ode to the Baby Swing!

Some things in life just do not last, especially things that have mechanical moving parts.

You might laugh, but I got kind of sappy today when we said good-bye to our baby swing that we have had for over twelve years. It was done, it was broken, out of commission, and it was not going to work ever again, no matter how hard I wanted it to swing another baby.

We bought our baby swing the day we brought Megan home from the hospital. She was pretty fussy in the hospital and the nurses told us she loved the baby swing in the nursery. We hadn't bought one beforehand because people told us we wouldn't need one. Boy were they wrong!! Megan continued to be fussy at home and some days, she lived in that swing morning and night!

I remember putting her in the swing at the foot of our bed and turning it on at bedtime because she wouldn't settle down and go to sleep . We would turn the swing on and let it do its magic. Matt and I would wake up a couple of hours later, and she would still be swinging. I would often use it during the day too just to keep her settled down.

Megan at 3 days old.

Courtney did not need the swing so much because she was not the fussy baby like Megan was in the beginning. I think we used it for her, but not so much for our sanity as with Megan!

Courtney at 8 days old.

Then there was Christian was was also VERY fussy as a baby. I am not sure who spent more time in the swing, Christian or Megan!

Christian at about 6 weeks old.

And so when we brought Micah home from the hospital, we assumed our swing would still work. He was being fussy the first night we were home and we knew the swing performed magic! Matt went to the basement at 1 am, brought all the pieces up to Micah's room, and put it all together. After he turned it on, he said the motor just ground and it made an ugly noise. It was obviously broken and would not swing anymore. I was sad! Not just because the swing was broke, but because I had a fussy baby that I couldn't put in the swing!!

A couple nights later, Matt went to Walmart and got a new one. We were parents that were desperate for some sleep.  (Matt actually bought one, put it together, and we used it for about a week until somebody borrowed us theirs. Matt took the new one back apart and it went back to Walmart!)

I had to put Micah in our swing, even though it didn't work anymore.

Micah at about two months old.

Today, we said good bye to my swing. Babies R Us held a "Great Trade In Event" today, so we were able to take in something "old" and get a 25% off coupon for something "new." Matt was planning to just throw this swing away, but I thought we should at least get something for it! So we took the 25% and got the money off a new carseat for Micah.

Megan taking the swing into Babies R Us! I thought it was appropriate that she carried it in!

Good bye old swing, you did us well!!!

When we have to get rid of our bouncy seats, our crib, our glider, or anything else I have had since Megan, I will be sad too!!

Another first!

For the first time in Micah's short life, he slept in his crib last night!! For the last 1-2 months, he has been sleeping in his swing and honestly, he is starting to get too big for his swing. His reflux has gotten a lot better and I just think it's time to get into his crib.

I nursed him last night and got him to sleep. I was loving the baby time, so I just sat and held him for about an hour. By this time, he was sound asleep! I thought that I should try to put him in his crib and he might not wake up. I put him down and he continued to sleep! YAY!!

He slept in his crib all night! Maybe he will do it again tonight!

Poor Micah!

Being the fourth baby, Micah's older siblings are going to have some fun with him. This is what they did to him yesterday!

First, they handcuffed him.

Then they put him in jail. (still handcuffed!)

Finally, he was let free!! He was a bit confused about why everybody was laughing at him!!

Luckily, it all ended well!!

Early Riser!

After Micah fell asleep last night around 7:15, I figured he would be up sometime to eat. He has been falling asleep early a lot lately, and I always debate whether I should wake him up about 9-10 pm to feed him, pump the milk off, or just let him wake up on his own sometime during the night.

On Thursday night, I decided to wake him up about 10 pm and feed him. He then slept until about 7 am. This was after he fell asleep about 7:15 pm.

Last night, I just went to bed and figured he would wake me up if he was hungry. Sure enough, he woke up about midnight, so I spent some time feeding him. Usually I can feed him and he goes right back to sleep. Last night, I ended up changing his clothes at midnight. Since I fed him so much before he went to bed, he had peed through his clothes! When I changed him, he kind of woke up and was smiling at me. I did not want to be up longer than I had to! I put him back in his swing and turned his music on and let him swing for awhile. I then went back to bed.

After about 15 minutes, I went back in and checked on him and he was still half awake, but getting back to sleep. I gave him another 15 minutes and he was sound asleep. I turned his swing off, turned the hall light off, and went back to bed. That was easy enough! (I was up for about an hour though.)

I thought for sure he would sleep until at least 7 am, but around 6 am, he was fussing in his room already! I didn't have a choice, but to go get him up for the day. I would have loved to sleep some more! I might need  a nap later today!

Moving Forward!

Who knew you would need recovery time after a vacation? Even though we have been home for almost a week, I feel like I am finally catching up on things. I think I have finally caught up on sleep. I am not falling asleep at 5:30 pm anymore! As for clothes, I am just getting to the last load of vacation clothes today.

We did manage to get the kids back to school on Wednesday after we were done with our classes at the learning center. We managed to get math done on Wednesday. On Thursday, we added in Courtney's English, and today, we were able to do English or phonics with all three AND math with all three! I read a portion of a Bible reading to them today. I feel like we are finally getting somewhere with our schoolwork! (We did pass the halfway mark in our math books this week!)

I think we are going to TRY to add some of our Sonlight stuff back in on Monday. I am anxious to get back to our reading time, and I know the kids are too! I mentioned to them today that I might start our read aloud on Monday and they about jumped for joy! I really do miss reading to them everyday.

I am able to do this now because Micah is consistently sleeping through the night and is up about 7 am. I am no longer up during the night, and I don't need the mornings to catch up on some sleep. If I did need to sleep in, then I let the kids sleep in, and we didn't start school until about 10:30-11 on most days. Now that I am up at 7, I usually wake the kids up at 7:30 and then we can get started by about 9 or 9:30. You know how much schoolwork I can accomplish in that extra hour??

I know that we will have to take it slowly on Monday and just get done what we can. Micah still needs time to nurse and time to get him down for naps. We also need to make sure to play with him during the day. That is not a problem though around here though!! He has been taking hour long naps lately too, which helps tremendously! I have been putting him up in his room to sleep and I think that has made a huge difference in how well he sleeps and how rested he is afterwards.

I also found lately that the best way to keep him happy is to just keep feeding him! Tonight I fed him at 5,6, and 7. He was super tired at this time and I think he was trying to get himself to sleep. He finally fell asleep around 7:15 tonight and I am sure I probably won't see him until 7 am. He is definitely getting on a better schedule.

We don't have anything major scheduled for as far as I can foresee, so I think we can get settled into a good schedule for school and keep moving forward.  After Micah's birth, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and now Mexico, I feel school has just been in limbo for the last three months. Now that everything is settling down, we can finally get something accomplished.

Poor Micah!

This is what the girls did to Micah today. Apparently he thought it was funny too!

I am sure they will do more crazy things with him as time goes on!

Back from Mexico!

We pulled into our garage last night at 11:10 pm! It was so nice to be home.

We had three flights yesterday that began at 7 am (mountain time). We flew from Los Cabos, Mexico to Mexico City (where we sat for 4 hours) to Houston to Omaha. It was quite the day!! We were up at 4 am.  The flights all went great and I did NOT get sick! What a relief that was!

The girls waited for us to get home, so they were still wide awake with grandma when we got home. We were up until about 1 am talking about our trip and getting things situated. They were pretty excited that we were home!

But now we are home and need to get adjusted back to home life. Micah woke up at 6:45 and I heard his sweet baby sounds. I haven't heard those in four days! Those sweet baby sounds means that he is awake and will want to eat. I hadn't nursed him for four days, so I was hoping it would go well and he latched right back on! Praise God! I was actually worried about him not nursing when we got home!

The only child I have not seen yet is Christian. He's usually up right away, but apparently he is tired this morning. It sounds like they had quite an adventurous weekend while we were gone. He was good too, which is a good thing!

My plan for today is to unpack and get things back in order. I think I will need to find time for a nap today, I am very tired!! Matt took the day off and we probably won't have school, but I will probably go ahead with my two piano lessons that are scheduled. That will give us a great excuse to clean the legos that have taken over my living room!

By the way, Los Cabos is beautiful and we had a GREAT trip!

This week!

T-minus four days until Mexico. I can hardly believe it is this week already! Am I ready to leave my baby? not really...sniff, sniff. But Micah will be well fed! I have almost 100 ounces of milk in the freezer for him!

I told the kids that there will be minimum school this week, so I can get everything ready. Not only do I have to get everything for myself ready, I have to get everything for them ready too! Grandmas are coming to stay at our house with the kids, so I need the house in order. I also need to leave instructions for Micah and a meal plan! I thought maybe I should have laundry caught up and their rooms cleaned too! We will see what actually gets done!

But as for today, we got math accomplished this morning and my goal this afternoon is to find a new swimsuit. I was pregnant last summer, so I can't wear that one again. The one before that is just worn out and gross. Grandma is already in town watching a grandbaby, so I am going to bless her with four more grandbabies for the afternoon. :)  This will give Micah another chance to take a bottle!  My goal is to find a suit that fits (still haven't lost all that baby weight) and is modest. I may look for some new shorts while I am out and get a few other things, like motion sickness medicine!

I should start making a list of the things I need to take on this trip!

Back to Normal for Micah

I swear last week Micah was going through a growth spurt. He insisted on eating between 1 1/2 to 3 hours all day long! He was up by 7 in the morning and would not go to bed until 10 at night. The week before, I was able to get him to bed by 8.

This week, I feel like we are back to normal. His feedings are spread out more and we are going back to bed at 8 pm.

Last night, this young boy fell asleep at 7:45 pm and Megan put him in his car seat in the kitchen. We figured he would be up again to eat because I fed him around 6 pm. Nope! This child slept until 6:45 this morning and did not wake up at all! I never got his diaper or his clothes changed because Matt and I didn't want to wake him up. We just took his car seat up to his room and he just slept in there all night! I, on the other hand, kept going into his room to make sure he was alright and I was listening to hear whether he was going to wake up at all.

Tonight he was asleep by 8 pm. I put him in his swing around 9:30 and figured he would stay sleeping, so I went and pumped 3 oz. Guess what? He is now awake and will probably want to be fed! He might get some practice taking a bottle! I don't have any milk left!!

We will see what tomorrow brings with the little guy!
