Why does my 19 month old son think it is cool to wake up at 5:55 AM on the day after a 5 day vacation?? He doesn't just wake up and sit there peacefully either, he screams at the top of his lungs until someone comes and gets him!! He needs to stop being afraid of being alone!
Good thing he woke up though. Matt forgot to set his alarm and he needed to get to work!

Ugh...packing...
Have I ever mentioned how much I LOATHE packing the camper?? I love to go camping, but I really despise all the work it takes to load it up! I wish we could just leave it loaded and plugged it in!! But nope. We have neighborhood covenants which say we can only have our camper in our driveway for 2 days. This means we need to unpack everything and move it to the storage facility every. single. camping. trip!!
The thing that takes the most time is getting ready to pack. So weird, I know. I wash all the clothes in the house, so they are all clean and available to take along. I usually have to go grocery shopping too to get all the food we need. This all needs to be done before I can even start packing.
I worked on laundry all day today and went grocery shopping tonight. I still have a few loads left of laundry to do tomorrow, but a majority of it is done.
The actually part of packing does not take long. The girls can pack their own things and I do my own items along with the boys.
Packing up the food can also take awhile. It helps that I have all the meals planned out, so we should only take what food we will need. I usually end up taking a few extra meals. We are going to be gone from Thursday until Tuesday on this trip, so we need to take quite a bit along.
We want to make some granola to take along yet and maybe some cookies. Megan and I will do some baking in the morning. :)
Our goal is to get out by noon, but I am not sure if that will happen!!

Finishing up school today!
I never really have a plan when it comes to finishing school in May. It usually just falls together and we call it a year! The same thing happened this year!
I wanted to end our history curriculum, science, writing, spelling, and reading at the end of May and then continue on with English and math throughout the summer. Somehow, all of these lined up this year again, and we are able to finish them this week! Like I said, it always comes together at a good stopping point!
Today Megan is finishing her science chapter with a test. She will pick this back up in the fall. She only got halfway through her science book, so there will be plenty left for next year. The rest of her book is on the human body and she told me there is NO WAY she is going to skip that part and move onto the 8th grade book. She is super interested in the human body! Actually, she has told me that she wants to keep doing science all summer. She does it independently, so she can do whatever she wants. :)
We already finished her reading last week. She finished writing a couple of days ago and will have a spelling test today to finish that section.
We are in the middle of a prealgebra section in Math with her, so we will pick that up again next week along with the rest of her English chapter. We are close to finishing her math book, so when we are done there, we are going to skim the 8th grade book over the summer. She is then going to start prealgebra in the fall with a different curriculum. English is going to take awhile to finish over the summer. I don't know how we got so behind!!
As for Courtney, she is finishing up her chapter in math with a math test today, so we are at a good stopping point until next week. She has about 3 chapters left in that book along with quite a bit in English. We will be at these two subjects for awhile!
She is finishing up writing today along with spelling. She finished reading last week.
Christian and Courtney do science together, and they completed their chapter yesterday. We will put that away until next fall. I believe they have four chapters left in their science book.
As for their history curriculum that everybody does together, we will get to the end of week 21 today! We have 35 weeks altogether. We will put this away until next fall and then pull it back out. We should be done with that around Christmas time. I am still trying to decide if I am going to start Megan in a new history in that fall that is more grade level or keep her doing this with the younger two. She keeps begging me for something more challenging! I needed a low-key year this year with Micah, but I think we can step it up next year.
As for Micah, he thinks he has to be entertained the entire time we are doing school! We are finally getting into a routine with him, and now we are done for awhile! He will probably like that!!

New York City again??
Matt and I are planning another great big road trip for our family this summer. He will be done with his current contract at the end of June and then he is taking six weeks off of work!!! He and I both think this will be another perfect opportunity to hit the road and explore our great country again!
When we started talking about where to go, we had a few ideas. We had already made some vacation plans with some friends from Illinois to head into Michigan in July, so we needed to decide where to go when we were done with them. After looking at the map many, many times and talking about places to go on from there, Matt and I finally decided that we would take the family and head into CANADA!! Neither one of us has ever been there before! We then decided that we would come back into the United States up by New Hampshire and Vermont. Again, we have never been to those states before!
After getting this figured out, I asked him if we could stop by New York City on the way home. We were there four years ago and I loved it!! At that time, he told me he would never take me back there. He really despises big cities! When I asked him about taking me back the other day, he said, "Well, maybe just for 1-2 days, but that is it!" I about fell out of my chair. I could hardly believe he said he would go back there!
Tonight when we were talking to my friends, he said, "I will go back to New York City for 2-3 days and that is it!" Wow! We are up to three days now!! I will take it!!
We also plan on stopping in Washington DC again for awhile. There were so many things we missed four years ago! I would love to see things over again. Plus with the kids being so much older, I think they will appreciate things at a better level.
Now I thought we were crazy taking a 3 year old on a long road trip in 2013, now we will be taking a 20 month old!!! I think he will be spending a majority of his time in the front carrier!!!

The End of Basketball!
After playing basketball for 4 months, we are finally done for awhile. Courtney and Christian played in January and February with the Upward Program and about a week after they finished with that, they started playing at the YMCA! It has been a great experience and both kids have learned a lot. Matt and I have learned that Courtney has a huge passion for basketball and would probably play it all day long if we would let her!
She almost didn't get to play in her last game today. During last week's practice (a week ago Friday), she fell and then somebody stepped on her wrist. It hurt pretty bad Friday night. It was still pretty painful and swollen on Monday, so I went and had it x-rayed. Luckily, nothing was broken. While this was healing, we said she could go to practice last Wednesday, but gave her specific instructions not play so hard and don't try any three pointers! During this practice though, she was going for a rebound and jammed two fingers!! What am I going to do with her?? These were then swollen for a couple of days! At one point, Matt mentioned that she could not go to practice on Friday night or play in her game today! She needed to let her wrist and fingers heal.
Courtney, the smart one that she is, pleaded with Matt. They only have six people on their team and two of them were not going to be there today. She didn't want to leave her team with just three people, so Matt let her play. She wore a brace around her wrist and taped her two fingers together. She didn't play as hard as she usually does, but she still made three baskets!
Her coach has kind of taken her under his wing these last two weeks and wants her to play select basketball next year. We will see if that works out.
I am not going to miss getting up at 6:30 am on Saturday mornings to make it to 8 am games. Why do they play the younger kids right away in the morning?? It will also be weird not having to sit around all day until Courtney plays around 2-3 pm. I will actually have my Saturdays back!!

Camping Thoughts!
We went camping this last weekend with a few of our friends and I have had some time to reflect on everything. Some of it was good, others was not so good! I learned a few things!
1. I must always have some Benadryl on hand for Micah. I had some in my camper, but when we went to my parents' for the evening, we sat outside and his eyes got swollen and red! Matt left to go get some Benadryl for him, but by the time he got back, Micah looked better. I also need to know how much to give him! The bottle he brought back was for 6-11 year olds and distinctly said not to give to kids under 2! Well, Micah is under 2. I might call his allergist tomorrow and see what I can give him when we are out camping or even outside all day. I would love to know what he is allergic to!
2. As for camping, I cannot sit around all day and do nothing. We went camping with two other families and they loved just sitting at the campsite all day, which is totally FINE, but it's just not for me. I need to get up once in awhile and go for a walk and go explore. I cannot sit in one place or talk to the same people for an extended period of time. I often found myself sneaking off into my camper for some "me" time. I also would take Micah all by myself to the playground just to "do something." I love going for walks, so I did some of that too. Luckily, we had quite a bit to do this weekend, so I didn't feel like I had to sit there all day with everybody.
3. Which should take priority? Small group or family? I am going to vent a little bit here. We are part of a small group through our church, which meets on Sunday nights. (This is who we were camping with this last weekend) Often we have family events on Sunday nights. Matt and I are always torn on where we should put our priority. Our church wants you to make a commitment to a small group (and even make you sign a commitment form), but I feel that family should come before small group. (Wouldn't you too??). We are committed to small group, but when family events come up, we think those should take priority.
We had a small group social planned for Saturday night, but then earlier in the week, my mom let me know we were going to get together on Saturday night for Mother's Day. I knew what I had to do- family first! But honestly, not every one in our small group thinks that family should come first. They have the thought that small group is their "family" (they don't get along with their real family) and that group needs to be a priority. They have even made comments to us in the past about how we skip small group for family events! I was honestly hesitant to tell our leaders that we were not going to be there!! I told them about lunch time on Saturday and I could tell they weren't happy. That night before we left, they even asked us in Matt or any of the kids were going to stay behind at the campsite. NOPE! Family first!
4. Speaking of small group, I am glad we left and did not stay for the social. This was a church social event, but when we got back, the six adults were playing a very adult game that was very inappropriate for a church sponsored event!!! Matt and I could not believe what was going on! This game was full of cuss words and just very bad. We couldn't believe that the leaders of our small group were participating in this game. (Yes, I know we are all sinners and all do bad things, but this was doing something sinful very willingly!!) Matt was out by where they were playing the game for awhile (not participating) and could hardly believe his ears. He had never heard these people talk like this before! He kept thinking of the Bible verse that says we are supposed to keep our thoughts clean and pure. Not many pure thoughts going on around that table!! Matt said he actually felt uncomfortable sitting there listening to it all, but he didn't quite know how to get up and leave without being rude. I would have just got up and left!!
5. After we got back, Megan ran off to be with her friends. There were five other middle school girls there and obviously they had been hanging out all night. I was in the camper putting Micah to bed when Megan burst through the door just crying her little heart out!! She couldn't tell me fast enough what had happened! They were in another camper and they were all playing a game very nicely together. Then some of the girls decided to show them some dance moves from dance team (which she said were inappropriate) and then they all went into a camper bedroom and shut the door on her. She could then hear them talking about HER behind the closed door!! She ended up leaving the camper because she was just standing there all by herself! One of them involved in this was her BEST FREIND!! It didn't help that she was extremely tired, but I just reassured her that she did the right thing! She left the situation. I told her whatever they were talking about was something that she didn't need to be a part of anyway! I then told her that this is what middle school is like! But she doesn't deal with this on a daily basis, so it kind of shocked her.
It took us awhile to calm her down and she eventually got a good night's sleep. She saw her friend the next day and they just picked up like nothing happened, which is good, but if she only knew how mad Megan was the night before!!
6. After these two events, I was ready to go home on Sunday. Actually I was ready to go home at 7:30 am! I just wanted to leave because of all this, but Matt said we can't run away from our problems. He is right. We stayed, but I didn't talk to many of our friends Sunday morning. I was still kind of shocked at how the leaders of our small group were acting the night before. These are ones who we are supposed to look up to and be encouraged by in times of need and who should be models of the Christian faith. I just needed time to figure all my thoughts out. (Again, none of us are perfect and we all sin.) We ended up going home about 2.
Next time we are going camping by ourselves!!!

First Camping Trip of the Year!
Tomorrow we are leaving to go on a weekend camping trip. I don't mind camping; it is just the packing that I despise! And now that there are four of us, it is even worse. :( There is just so much to take for 3 days. And the baby, why does he take so much??
Today Megan said, "Mom, I would rather go on long camping trips than these short ones." AMEN!!! A few years ago, Matt and I set a minimum amount of three nights for a camping trip. Otherwise it was not worth the work. We tend to stick to this rule.
I am very jealous of those people that live in the country and can just leave their camper loaded. Not us! We have to unpack everything out of it every. single. time and clean it completely out. We store it in a local storage place, so we want everything out of it. We don't want to take any chances of anything getting stolen (which has happened once already.)
Over the winter, we stored our camper in a storage shed and put mouse poison everywhere. We had mice and rats in it a few years ago and just paid over $300 to finally get the ventilation fixed that they ate through. :( We were really hoping they would have stayed out of the camper this last winter, but as I was going through some drawers tonight, I found mouse poop in a few places. Ugh! They were in drawers with towels in them, so now I need to rewash everything before tomorrow.
We do have a big camping trip scheduled for July. We don't have many details yet, but we are working on them! Matt took six weeks off of work, so we are going to do some travelling. Like Matt says, we have a new truck, nice camper, and plenty of time, so why not??

Who knew??
Yesterday I took Micah to his 18 month checkup with his pediatrician. I had quite a few lists of questions to ask her, but one of my main ones was why he had blisters all over his feet and why were some places peeling. I told her that he had hands, foot, and mouth disease a few weeks ago and she said it is all from that! She said both his feet will peel and his toenails will fall off!! What?? The virus apparently infects the nailbed and causes all this to happen about 2-3 weeks after the infection. When I got home, I checked out Christian's feet, and they are doing the same thing! He actually has about a one inch area on his heel that he has been peeling. It's actually kind of cool to see the new skin underneath. I do not look forward to seeing his toenails fall off. I looked at Christian's hands and they are doing the same thing!
On a more encouraging note, Micah weighs 24 lbs. 10 ounces. He gained quite a bit from three months ago. He is also 31 1/2 inches tall. He has grown 10 inches since he was born.
We talked about all his crazy allergies. She said to keep taking him to the allergist and keep doing what he says. Our allergist recommended getting an epipen last week when we were there. After I called the pharmacist, I found out that they are $300!! I know it can save his life, but still! Honestly, I am not so concerned about him. I can easily keep him away from kiwi! She gave me a few suggestions about how to get one cheaper.
I also told her that he tells us when he is going to the bathroom. I have had a few people tell me he is too young to potty train, but I have also heard of other boys being trained at 18 months. I am in no hurry, but if he is ready, I could at least try, right?? That is exactly what she said. She recommended just getting the potty chair out and introducing him to it. Just see what he does. I think that sounds like a plan.
At the end of the appointment, he got two shots. I don't want to do any more than that! He didn't seem to have any reactions.
I don't take him back again until his 2 year checkup!

Braces!!
It actually happened. I got braces yesterday! And wow, am I sore today! It actually brings back memories of when I had braces about 25 years ago. (I think I was in 8th or 9th grade?) I remember now that the brackets and wires rub on your cheeks a lot and wax is awesome. It is all coming back to me! The orthodontist said it takes a little bit to build up callouses on your cheeks and actually advised me to not use wax too much because this would just delay the process. He did advise me to take advil. :)
Things really started hurting last night. Last night for bedtime. Christian asked me to read a Magic School bus book to him. If you don't know, these books are long! About half way through, I could really feel the wires digging into my cheeks and starting to hurt. I finished out the book and then tried not to talk the rest of the night.
In addition to being sore, I cannot eat much. It has been an oatmeal and mashed potato kind of day. At this moment, I am actually hungry, but don't really know what I should eat at 9:30 at night.
In addition to not being able to eat much, we are also out of milk and butter, which a lot of "soft" foods are made out of. Breakfast tomorrow might be interesting! Especially since we have to get up early and get to church by 8:45 am!

Braces today!!
Barring nobody gets sick in the next two hours, I am getting braces today!! This has been about six years in the making. I can hardly believe I am doing this.
Seriously. I figure I am 40 this year. I am not getting any younger. Might as well fix my teeth while I can! (And while insurance gives us a great BIG discount!!!)

Allergy Trouble
Micah had some allergy trouble last Sunday. I have to be very careful with this kid because he is allergic to so many things!
Every Sunday, we take him to the nursery at church, and they serve animal cookies for a snack. Every time we take him there, I sign him in at his room and distinctly tell the workers that he can NOT have animal cookies. I am pretty sure they are made out of eggs and wheat, which would cause hives. I write it down on a piece of paper, just incase the workers get overwhelmed by all the kids and forget to give him his cheerios. The workers are supposed to check the sheet and make sure everybody can have cookies before giving them out. Everybody has done exactly as they were supposed to until Sunday.
I was sitting in church Sunday and I got a text from the leader of the nursery. "Just to let you know, Micah got a bite of an animal cookie." Apparently the workers did NOT check the sheet and they weren't in there when I dropped him off to tell them, so they didn't get the message. They were feeding him cookies when the leader of the nursery came by and saw what he was eating. I texted back and asked if he was ok or breaking out in hives. His eggs were super high on his allergy test, so I figured if there were eggs, he would react. She responded that he looked fine and was playing fine, so not too worry. I told her when church was over, I would come check on him.
On my way to the nursery after church, this same lady pulled me to the side and said there was only wheat in the cookies and not any eggs. That made me feel better! His wheat numbers were really small compared to his eggs. I went and checked on him and he seemed to be doing fine. I took his shirt off to check for hives and I didn't see any. The area around his mouth wasn't red either!
I told him that he would react within an hour. This was about 40 minutes after he ate the cookie and he was still fine. He was going to stay in the nursery the next hour while I helped in kindergarten, so I told the next set of workers to NOT give him animal cookies and to continue to watch him. He had never had wheat, so I didn't know what he would do.
So in the end, the people who gave him the cookies felt really bad! The head of the nursery also requested that I get an allergy wristband and put it on him when I check him in. I have asked about this in the past and they always told me not to. I think I might from now on! But I also know he won't react too bad if he gets some wheat!
That same night, we had small group at another person's house and they have three very nice pitbulls. Almost too nice!! Micah also has an allergy to dogs and I have seen him react, so I know it is real! The owners do not put these dogs away during small group. They let them in the living room and everybody pets them the whole time we are there. This makes it really hard for me because I have to hold Micah on my lap for two hours. This is not getting easy to do anymore! As I am holding him, I have to constantly push the dogs away from us. They constantly come over and want me to pet them! About a month ago, we were over there and I had let Micah on the floor. One of the dogs came over and licked him. We had 2-3 hives on his face within 20 minutes!
Luckily, I was able to hold him for awhile last Sunday and eventually I was able to put him down for awhile and the dogs let him alone. I know these dogs are very important to these people, but I wish I could get 10 minutes of time for him to run around on the floor without the dogs all over him!! .
Wheat, eggs, dogs...ugh, what a Sunday!!!
